How to Select a Professional Waterproofer
Choosing the best waterproofing system, as well as a reputable company,
can be a challenge. This information is designed to help you make a good
decision with respect to both of these important decisions.
To select a professional company, ask these simple questions:
- How long has the company been in the waterproofing business? Look for
a well established company with a solid reputation.
-
What type of warranty does the company offer? Look for a lifetime
transferable (from owner to owner) warranty. It protects you for
the life of the home, or is a nice selling feature if you decide to move.
-
If a pump is required, does the lifetime warranty cover the pump versus
just offering a manufacturers warranty which is typically 1-3 years.
-
Ask the company if the solutions they are offering will guarantee no
future problems in the area treated, as well as the walls, foor, and cove
area (where the wall and the floor meet). Some companies attempt to sell
you a cheaper, inferior patch job or partial solutions that may appeal to
your pocketbook, but not solve the problem. If you cannot afford what you
need, wait.
-
Does the company provide a clear, written estimate?
-
Does the company meet state and local licensing requirements?
-
Is the company insured up to at least $1,000,000?
-
Does the company have good solid credentials? Such as:
- NAWC - National Association of Waterproofing and Structural Repair Contractors
- NARI - National Association of Remodeling Industry
- NAHB - National Association of Home Builders
-
Is the company listed with Dun and Bradstreet which watches the financial
stability of companies? You want a company that will be around in the
future.
-
Does the company offer references from statisfied customers? Ask to see
customer referral letters.
-
Does the company have national support and ongoing training?
-
Does the company provide a thorough inside and outside inspection of your
foundation?
-
Does the company provide you with all available solutions and explain what
each one solves?
-
Does the company have a patented system? If they do not, but claim that
they can do another company's system, you may not be getting what you pay
for. A patent protects the consumer and guarantees you will get what you
pay for versus a cheaper, inferior copy.
-
Is the company listed in The Yellow Pages?
-
Are you comfortable with the company and how professionally they conduct
themselves from the office, to the inspector, to the installation
department?
-
When you call the company, do you get an answering service, or someone who
can help you immediately?
-
Is the company part of a national franchise organization? If so, you have
a
better chance of getting a sharp price due to the company's purchasing
power.
The quantity discounts they get mean better prices for you.
-
Is the company locally owned and operated?
-
Is the company willing to work with little or no money down?
-
Is the company B.O.C.A. (Building Official Code Administrators) evaluated
for "waterproofing" and not a "water collection" system?
Waterproofing means keeping water away from the foundation.
A water collection system means allowing water to flow through and
collect around the foundation. A water collection system may cause
structural problems and allow continued signs of water to persist.
-
Is the company H.U.D. evaluated?
